These days people have many varying ideas about what is SEO. Whenever the word SEO is mentioned they immediately think of paid advertisements or fancy social media activities; however the fact of the matter is that SEO basics have not changed much over the years. If you ignore the SEO fundamentals and focus on the fancy things, it’s much like buying expensive perfume and never bathing.
So What are the SEO Fundamentals?
The following are just a few search engine optimization fundamentals that you should be aware of before going to work on your website:
What Does SEO Do?
The first thing you need to know is what is the purpose of SEO? It’s really very simple… SEO has 2 main purposes:
1. First and foremost, it provides a seamless user experience for visitors to your website
2. Secondly, SEO helps you communicate to search engines which searches to recommend you for.
I.e. what should a user search for on a search engine for your website to come up.
What do Search Engines Look For
We’ll do you a big favor! We’ll not only tell you what they look for, but also what they do NOT look for:
• What search engines look for – They look for:
Awesome content – Content which is original and well organized
Keywords – Make sure you have a fairly good sprinkling of relevant keywords across your pages, especially in headings and page titles
Authority – They check to see if your content is good enough to mark you as an authority on the subject
Site Performance – How fast is your site? The faster your site responds to search engines the better!
• What search engines don’t look for – A few of the following:
Keyword Stuffing – Use that keyword as many times as you possibly can, if you want search engines to IGNORE you!!
Awful User Experience – If your page is full of useless ads that causes your bounce rate to go sky high, you’re not going to get many points from search engines
Domain names are often overlooked by website owners, but choosing your domain name wisely can have an incredible impact on your site’s ranking on search engines.
Keep some of the following things in mind:
Keep Domain Names Consistent – Do both ‘www.yourdomain.com’ and ‘yourdomain.com’ lead to your website? If not you have a problem.
Keywords – Make sure your domain name contains your most important keyword if at all possible!
Optimize Your Site for All Sorts of Devices
In a few years, the majority of your visitors are going to be browsing your site on their smartphones; are you ready for that? Make sure your site is optimized for handheld devices… go for responsive websites!
