When online, most of the time people forget that they are posting on social media. That’s because they are so used to it.
This frequency and ease of access has made people so casual about what they post on social media that we had to come up with a list of thing that you should NOT do on social media.
Following is a list of things that should not be done in any social realm of the internet unless you want to lose your credibility, money, job, and in some cases friends.
Don’t Say You Hate Your Job
However much you hate your job and/or your boss never post hate messages about your workplace. Even if all what you have written is true!
Photos of Your Kids
We all have been guilty of this. But if you make the 40% who are not mindful of their privacy settings, then your child’s pictures can easily land up in the wrong hands. Stalkers can single your kid out or child pornographers can misuse your kid’s pictures etc. You think it won’t happen to you until it does. So if you do want to share your kid’s pictures do it with a select group of people whom you trust.
Sharing social plans can be a security hazard. The estranged ex, a kidnapper can easily make plans to harm you.
Use personal messages when planning a party and try being less specific with your check-ins.
Projects, acquisitions, mergers, expansions, promotions etc. should never be a part of your online social talk, PERIOD!
Address & Phone Number
This mistake is like inviting a burglar/rapist/murderer etc. into your house for coffee. Need I say more?
Personal Financial Information
One would think that no one shares this information but you will be surprised at how many people innocently share financial information online and get cheated out of their hard earned money.
Passwords & Password Hints
Did you know that facebook has password sharing on top of its lists of things not to share? Why? Because it is common enough. Sharing passwords with boyfriends/girlfriends, friends, spouses etc. seems natural. But think of the time when they no longer are your boyfriend/girlfriend, friend or spouse. Would you want then to have access to your personal info?
Some people experiment with many activities and substances. Things that border the illegal and some that are outright illegal. These things can easily trigger a criminal prosecution, consequences of which can affect the rest of your life.
Never threaten a person or a group on social media. Authorities now days take these online threats very seriously. Even anonymous, empty threats can trigger a flag and make you liable to investigation.
What other absolute social media no-no’s can you think of? Please tell us in the comments below!
