Graphic design is a skill that is quickly becoming vital for just about any industry. Today, in order to brand your firm, market your products, or even just to create a meme for Facebook, you need a graphic designer!
Because of the popularity of graphic design, it is also quickly becoming a cut-throat field; graphic designers need to constantly ‘up’ their skills in order to stay competitive and appeal to potential clients. So, as a big favor to our friends in graphic design, we put together a list of 5 To-Dos no graphic designer can do without.
Design Brief – Use it!
‘Aah who cares what the customer wants! What does he/she/it know anyway?!’ This seems to be the attitude of many a graphic designer today. Well buddy, the customer is paying the bill… so you would do well to pay attention to what he/she/it wants.
Make sure you follow the customer’s requirements, both explicit (what he/she has written down) and implicit (though not mentioned it is clear these will also be needed).
Focus on the Target Audience
Again, this should be mentioned in the customer’s requirements. If you miss the target audience in your design, no matter how awesome the design is, you’ve just wasted your customer’s time and money.
Stay Up-to-Date & Get a Clue
Don’t get into your comfort zone. The graphic design industry is constantly going through changes in terms of technology, tools and techniques. Make sure you stay up to date so that you can offer your client the best service out there.
Start in Black & White
This is a mistake many graphic designers make… they begin adding color to their design right from the very beginning. This can spell trouble because – as you will find out – some promotional materials only allow for black and white. And you may also find out that your color creation looks AWFUL in black and white.
Simplicity is Good
Do you think that old saying, ‘Too many cooks…’ is out of date? Well, it’s not!!
Too many graphic designers seem to think that the more ‘stuff’ they add to their work, the better. In fact, this often just makes the design extremely complex and sometimes messy. Simplicity has a power all its own and often makes a bigger impression on your audience.
So, there you have 5 extremely important To-Dos for graphic design… Can you think of anymore? Tell us about them in the comments below!
Hmm it seems like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just
sum it up what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any recommendations for inexperienced blog writers?
I’d genuinely appreciate it.
Please let me know if you’re looking for
a writer for your weblog. You have some really good posts
and I think I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some
of the load off, I’d love to write some articles
for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine.
Please shoot me an e-mail if interested. Thanks!
