Google recently introduced a new feature for Google Now. This feature is all set to bring together the two worlds of brick-and-mortar and online retail stores.
Available on Android phones, this feature alerts its users when they are close to a store which has an item that they have recently searched for online. For example, if you had searched for a specific skateboard online, when you walk past a skateboard store that has that particular model you will receive an alert from Google Now.
The notification that you get will have a picture of the product and information on pricing. The notification however, stops short of letting you know if the item is in stock or not.
If you think this is a nice new feature all you have to do is update the Google Search app.
Rob Abdul, an e-commerce consultant says that “It’s a win-win situation”. He is right, as this new feature is a natural progression and will allow Google’s advertisers to benefit from Google’s location-based tools.
Another expert, Doug Stephens, says that “It’s another way to make Google an indispensable product, whether it’s in or out of the home.”
Everything now depends on how Google executes the idea. Does it make it annoying or can it strike the perfect balance between advertisements and user experience. Some experts are however, skeptical and say that consumers will need some convincing to come onboard.
Another thing that is of concern for Google is that this feature could be considered a form of invasion of privacy. People might just disable the feature on this premise. How Google tackles this problem remains to be seen.
For sure the fine details of this feature will be ironed out by Google soon but this launch has indicated that Google is well aware of the opportunity that lies in the realm where brick-and-mortar is merged with the mobile commerce world.
Greetings! Quick question that’s totally off
topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly?
