Google Play Services 4.1 – A Look at the New API’s!
Folks, Google Play Services 4.1 has recently been launched and comes with some great updates as well as awesome new API’s for developers. One update that’s sure to be popular with Android users is improved battery life for all users who have Google Location Reporting enabled. Let’s take a closer look at some of the new API’s that are in store:
Google Drive Enabled
The new Google Play Services version comes with a developer preview of the Google Drive API for Android. Now developers will be able to read and write files on Google Drive allowing them to make their apps available on the net and across devices. Developers will also be able to work on their files offline and they will automatically sync once they’re back online. Other features of this new app include: save dialog and file picker.
Turn Based Multiplayer
Turn based multiplayer is now supported by Google Play Services which will allow developers to work on asynchronous games for playing with friends as well as auto-matched players. The new feature will allow support of anywhere between 2 – 8 additional players. As players take turns, their turn data will automatically be uploaded to Play Services and shared with the players.
The Google Mobile Ads SDK on Google Play Services 4.1 fully supports DoubleClick Ad Exchange, DoubleClick for Publishers, as well as Search Ads for Mobile Apps. Developers will be able to utilize a publisher-provided location API in order to provide Google a location when they request ads. This can help to significantly improve app-monetization.
Improved Google+ Experience
This new update of Google Play Services comes with a much enhanced Google+ user experience which makes it easier to share with the right people. There are also nicer auto-complete and suggested recipient features from your Gmail contacts, Google+ circles and device contacts. Once the rollout of the new Google Play Services updates is complete, developers will be able to use their Android SDK manager to download the SDK and get started!
