What is Content Marketing and How can it Help Your Business?

Content marketing is the new buzzword, especially since recent Google updates have thrown a curve ball at the world of SEO. Many SEO gurus have even begun suggesting that content marketing is the new SEO.

So what is content marketing? How does it work? How can it help your business and will it help boost your sales? These are the questions we’ll try and address in this article.

What is Content Marketing?

The Content Marking Institute defines content marketing as: ‘…a marketing technique of creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire, and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action.’

So content marketing includes both the creation of original, engaging, interesting content as well as the distribution. The purpose behind content marketing is not to sell something to your customers, but rather to engage your customers, familiarize them with your brand and develop a real relationship with them. This will automatically lead to an improvement in your business.

You should also know that content marketing is nothing new! A very early example of content marketing is when back in 1904, Jell-O published a recipe book for its customers. This eventually led to a huge increase in Jell-O pudding sales.
