What is Content Marketing and How can it Help Your Business?
Content marketing is the new buzzword, especially since recent Google updates have thrown a curve ball at the world of SEO. Many SEO gurus have even begun suggesting that content marketing is the new SEO.
So what is content marketing? How does it work? How can it help your business and will it help boost your sales? These are the questions we’ll try and address in this article.
What is Content Marketing?
The Content Marking Institute defines content marketing as: ‘…a marketing technique of creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire, and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action.’
So content marketing includes both the creation of original, engaging, interesting content as well as the distribution. The purpose behind content marketing is not to sell something to your customers, but rather to engage your customers, familiarize them with your brand and develop a real relationship with them. This will automatically lead to an improvement in your business.
You should also know that content marketing is nothing new! A very early example of content marketing is when back in 1904, Jell-O published a recipe book for its customers. This eventually led to a huge increase in Jell-O pudding sales.
How Does Content Marketing Work?
Suppose you have a furniture company. You may think content marketing is of no use to you; however you would be very surprised.
There are lots of very interesting articles, videos, pictures you could potentially develop for your customers covering topics such as:
• How different types of furniture is made
• How to care for your furniture and keep it looking great
• Interviews with furniture industry experts
• What are the latest trends in furniture
• How to mix and match your furniture
Once you’ve developed your content, now you need to find a way to share that content with your customers in order to make it go viral. There are several methods to do this including sharing your articles/videos/pictures on social media platforms such as your own company website/blog, Facebook and Twitter.
Next, if your content is really great, interested parties will view it and then begin sharing it with their friends or linking to it. The links and ‘Likes’ your content gets will give your website that much needed boost on search engines and will also make you much more visible on Facebook/Twitter.
How does Content Marketing Benefit Your Business?
‘But what is the ROI?’ you ask. ‘Why put so much effort into content marketing?’
Well there are several major benefits to your business as a result of content marketing.
The following are just a few:
• Authority Building – When your customers see you delivering such great content, they eventually begin to view you as an authority in your industry. Thus you have positioned yourself in a very strategic way.
• Sharing/Linking/Liking – Your amazing content begins making the rounds on the internet, getting passed from one person to the next. This is free publicity for your brand… people are becoming familiar with you. Many folks will begin linking to your articles and videos and this only further boosts your internet marketing and SEO.
• Increase in sales – Eventually, when one of your customers is thinking of purchasing a product, e.g. a nice arm chair or bed, who do you think they are most likely going to go to? You guessed it!
