Steps to Minimizing the Impact of Cloud Downtime on Your Business
As the internet becomes more and more reliable, many businesses have started turning to online solutions to replace many of their resources which were traditionally in house. With the emergence of Cloud solutions many businesses are now outsourcing services such as IT administration and even accounting to cloud solution providers.
On the whole, this has been a very positive change for businesses; however there have been times when a cloud solutions provider’s services have gone down causing serious loss to their clients. For example, the recent Amazon failure is estimated to have cost approximately $1,100 for each minute. So what is a business to do if and when their cloud services solutions provide goes down? Here are five suggestions:
Sign an SLA with your Solutions Provider
The importance of having an SLA with your solutions provider cannot be overstated. An SLA is standard practice these days so there is no reason your service provider should refuse to sign one with you. If for whatever reason they violate their service level agreement you can hold them accountable and perhaps even be compensated for any loss you may have suffered.
Don’t Outsource Everything to the Cloud
No matter how reliable cloud solutions are becoming, you must keep in mind that most cloud services are standard. I.e. if you require something very unique or bespoke chances are cloud solutions providers will not be able to provide you such a service to the level of quality you require. This means that you may still have a need to in-house staff members too.
Conduct a Risk Analysis
What are the chances of your cloud services going down? Are they high or low? What impact will it have on your company? How do you mitigate such risks? Ideally you should have conducted a risk analysis well before your opted for cloud services, but now that your cloud service provider has gone down, why not do a risk analysis in order to mitigate the impact of such a scenario in the near future?
Understand How Much Downtime Costs You
How much does each minute of lost time cost your business? Being able to quantify the cost of downtime is critical for any serious business and also allows you to better evaluate how worthwhile future investments in IT resources really are for your business.
Have a Backup Plan in Place
You’ve heard it a hundred times, ‘If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail’. Similarly, if you don’t have a backup plan in case your cloud services provider goes down; you are a sitting duck. You should always have a plan B in place in the case your primary solutions provider goes down because your customer will not accept that as an excuse.
